In a letter to UN Secretary General António Guterres and President of the UN Security Council Jamal Fares Alrowaiei on April 6, Saeed Iravani denounced the targeted assaults on universities in Iran, specifically highlighting the destruction of Sharif University of Technology and parts of Shahid Beheshti University. The ambassador characterized these attacks as deliberate war crimes and acts of state terrorism, calling on the international community to intervene and hold the perpetrators accountable for their actions that threaten global peace and security.
What follows is the text of the letter:
In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful
Excellency,
Further to my previous communications regarding the continued and deliberate targeting of civilian objects and infrastructure by the United States and the Israeli regime, I wish to bring to the urgent attention of Your Excellency and the members of the Security Council yet another grave breaches of international humanitarian law, acts of terrorism and war crimes being perpetrated through the deliberate and indiscriminate targeting of civilian objects in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In the early hours of 6 April 2026, Sharif University of Technology was attacked by the Israeli regime and the United States. This unlawful attack caused severe damage to the Faculty of Civil Engineering, the Department of Philosophy of Science, the Nano and Environmental Research Institutes, the Convergent Research Institute building, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and other facilities. This heinous act follows another war crime perpetrated by the aggressors on 3 April 2026, when parts of Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, including the Laser and Plasma Research Institute, were severely damaged. The intentional targeting of scientific institutions and universities constitutes a clear violation of international humanitarian law and amounts to a war crime.
Such barbarism, unprecedented in modern history, forms part of a broader and systematic policy, as openly acknowledged by the President of the United States and the criminal Prime Minister of the rogue Israeli regime, and constitutes a grave threat to international peace and security, demanding immediate attention and accountability. The United States and the Israeli regime must bear full responsibility for the commission of these atrocious war crimes.
The Islamic Republic of Iran calls upon the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the Security Council to unequivocally condemn these deliberate and heinous acts constituting war crimes and State terrorism directed against civilian objects and infrastructure.
The Security Council must take immediate, decisive and concrete measures to halt the ongoing criminal and unlawful acts of the United States and the Israeli regime and to ensure that all those responsible are held fully accountable under international law for the deliberate pursuit of policies resulting in war crimes and acts of State terrorism targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
I should be grateful if you would have the present letter circulated as an official document of the Security Council.
Please accept, Excellency, the assurances of my highest consideration.
