Iran Asserts Legal Right to Bar Hostile Vessels from Passing Through Hormuz Strait

In a telephone conversation on Friday, Araqchi and his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov discussed regional developments and the consequences of the ongoing military aggression by the United States and the Israeli regime against Iran.

Araqchi noted the efforts of a number of friendly neighboring countries to halt the conflict, underscoring that the fundamental views of Iran regarding the defense of its national rights and interests are completely clear.

Araqchi condemned the continued illegal attacks by the US and the Israeli regime on various targets in Iran, including civilian sites such as schools, hospitals, historical and cultural monuments, and residential areas, reaffirming Iran's determination to continue its resolute defense of its integrity.

The Iranian foreign minister attributed the existing insecurity in the Strait of Hormuz to the military aggressions by the US and the Israeli regime, stating that the strait is closed to American and Israeli vessels, as well as other parties involved in the military aggression against Iran.

Araqchi emphasized that preventing the passage of vessels belonging to aggressors and their allies through the Hormuz Strait is Iran's legal right as a coastal state, and relevant authorities in the Islamic Republic of Iran are fully aware of their responsibilities to ensure navigation security in this waterway.

He stated that measures have been taken to defend Iran's sovereignty and national security and to prevent aggressors from abusing the Hormuz Strait to carry out acts of aggression against Iran.

Araqchi also explained that the movement of vessels belonging to other countries through the Strait of Hormuz is coordinated with the relevant Iranian authorities.

For his part, the Russian foreign minister condemned the US and Israeli aggression, emphasizing the necessity to respect the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and expressing Russia's readiness to continue consultations aimed at helping to reduce tensions and restore security and stability in the region.

The US and the Israeli regime launched a large-scale unprovoked military campaign against Iran following the assassination of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, along with several senior military commanders and civilians on February 28.

The attacks have involved extensive aerial strikes on both military and civilian locations across Iran, causing significant casualties and widespread damage to infrastructure.

In response, the Iranian Armed Forces have carried out retaliatory operations, targeting American and Israeli positions in the occupied territories and at regional bases with waves of missiles and drones.
