In a post on his X account on Friday, Araqchi pointed to the US’ shifting stance on oil imports from Russia, particularly in light of the ongoing military aggression against Iran that has heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf and led to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The US spent months on bullying India into ending oil imports from Russia. After two weeks of war with Iran, White House is now begging the world—incl India—to buy Russian crude,” Araqchi said.
“Europe thought backing illegal war on Iran would win US support against Russia. Pathetic,” he added.
Attached to his message was a front page from Financial Times featuring the headline “Oil windfall gives Russian $150mn a day,” underscoring the irony of US efforts to pressure India into halting Russian oil imports, only to now seek global cooperation for purchasing Russian crude amidst escalating conflict.
The Iranian foreign minister’s remarks reflect a broader critique of Western support for military actions against Iran, which he deemed both misguided and ineffective.
