The survey, released Monday, found that 55 percent of respondents believe he is moving the country in a negative direction. That is up from 51 percent last April and 48 percent last March, The Hill reported.
In January 2021, the final month of his first term, 46 percent of respondents said Trump was altering the country for the worse.
A clear partisan divide is evident in the polling. While roughly eight in 10 Democrats and about two-thirds of independents said the state of the union is not strong, roughly 75 percent of Republicans said it is strong.
Nearly 70 percent of college graduates, meanwhile, said the country is not currently strong, while half of those without a college degree said it is strong.
These results come just over 24 hours before the president will deliver the first State of the Union address of his second term — he addressed a joint session of Congress last March, less than two months after returning to office.
As the president prepares for his speech, the Department of Homeland Security remains shut down. Congressional Democrats are seeking changes to federal immigration enforcement tactics, after the fatal shootings of U.S. citizens Renee Good and Alex Pretti by immigration officers last month sparked an outcry in Minneapolis and across the country.
A number of Democrats are skipping the speech and instead attending a counter rally on the National Mall, set for 8:30 p.m. Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) will also deliver the Democratic response to the president’s address.
Trump said Monday his speech will be “long” because “we have so much to talk about.” The president is expected to outline his priorities for the coming year, as a CNN poll published Monday found that nearly seven in 10 respondents believe he is focusing on the wrong problems.
In a polling average from Decision Desk HQ, Trump’s approval rating as of Friday sits at 41.7 percent and his disapproval rating is at 56.3 percent.
