Speaking in an interview with Omani television during a visit to Muscat, Larijani outlined Iran’s latest positions on regional developments and the talks with the United States.

He said that in previous rounds, negotiations had progressed to certain stages but it was the US that altered the course of the talks. Iran had repeatedly stated that it was ready to enter negotiations if they were conducted in a realistic manner, he added, noting that this position had been conveyed during the first session and publicly reiterated by Iran’s foreign minister and other officials, who stressed that Tehran’s approach was not negative but positive.

Larijani stated that the current framework of the discussions is specifically focused on the nuclear issue, adding that the American side has also concluded that negotiations should revolve around the nuclear matter. He emphasized that no talks have been held on other issues.

He cautioned against raising expectations too high, saying that although multiple invitations had been put forward by the US side, only one round of negotiations has been held so far.

If the talks succeed, they could be expanded and extended to other spheres, Larijani said, but added that he could not state with certainty at this stage whether the process would lead to dialogue on other disputes with the US or to a new definition of bilateral relations.

The Iranian official said the success of the negotiations would depend on whether they proceed within a reasonable framework. If additional demands are raised that could lead to failure, the path would become difficult, he warned.

Larijani also said there is no specific timeframe for reaching clear results, stressing that Iran seeks a swift resolution and is not pursuing delay. In his view, the issue is not overly complicated and does not require a lengthy period to resolve.

The SNSC secretary stated that the chances of success would be strengthened if both sides remain sincere about their stated positions and focus on them. He also highlighted the essential and pivotal role of the Sultanate of Oman in facilitating and advancing the negotiations.

Addressing obstacles to building lasting trust, Larijani said the main issue is the American claim that Iran seeks nuclear weapons. He reiterated that Iran does not intend to pursue nuclear arms and said the US, in return, could take steps to resolve certain issues.

He added that resolving these matters would have a direct impact on regional peace and could strengthen security. However, he said the region cannot move toward calm as long as the Israeli regime engages in provocative actions, adding that the US must understand that the region consists of significant countries with deep historical roots and large nations, and that a small regime cannot be imposed on others.

If such an understanding is reached, the region could move toward reconciliation and tranquility, Larijani concluded.
