Egypt Defender Hamdy Suffers ACL Injury

The Pyramids FC defender was stretchered off just before halftime during Egypt’s 3-1 extra-time win over Benin in the last 16, which secured the Pharaohs a place in the quarter-finals.

“Scans showed that Mohamed Hamdy has suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee,” Abou Al-Ela said.

The injury is a blow for coach Hossam Hassan, who is left with Ahmed Fatouh as his only left back for the remainder of the tournament.

Egypt will face the winner of the quarter-final between Burkina Faso and the defending champion Ivory Coast on Saturday, Ahram Online reported.

Hamdy will likely miss the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt is drawn in Group G of the 2026 FIFA World Cup along with Iran, Belgium and New Zealand.
