Speaking at a press conference reviewing Russia’s diplomatic activities in 2025, Lavrov rejected what he described as unfounded allegations coming from Washington.
“We have no plans to capture Greenland. It’s not our issue. We think Washington knows well about the absence of such plans both in Russia and China,” Lavrov said.
He also ruled out speculation about potential mutual assistance agreements with Greenland or Iceland, saying there were no conditions in place for such arrangements.
Meanwhile, Lavrov stressed that Russia is only observing developments surrounding Greenland and has no direct involvement, rejecting assertions that Moscow poses any threat to the territory.
Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of acquiring mineral-rich Greenland, an autonomous territory under Danish control, despite opposition from European countries, arguing that the move is necessary for US national security and to counter rivals such as China and Russia.
Lavrov addressed comparisons circulating in Western discourse, saying Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014, is as important to Russia’s security as Greenland is to the United States.
“When they justify what’s going on around Greenland by saying that otherwise Russia or China would seize it, there is no proof of that. And in the West, economists and political scientists are already refuting them,” Lavrov said.
“We have nothing to do with this issue. We will monitor the situation,” he added.
Separately, Lavrov linked the Greenland debate to the “consequences of the colonial era,” noting that the territory had been under Norwegian and later Danish control for centuries before its status changed in the mid-20th century.
He said Greenland’s colonial past and subsequent association arrangements, including its links with European structures, continue to influence current discussions.
