Iran registered approximately 892,000 births in the Iranian year 1404 (ended March 2026), the lowest annual figure reported in the past 70 years, according to newly released statistics.

The data also indicate that the number of marriages has declined by around 30 percent compared with the Iranian year 1401 (2022-23), Rokna News reported.

The figures point to broader demographic changes as many young Iranians increasingly weigh economic factors before deciding to marry or start a family.

Analysts say that while childbearing was traditionally viewed primarily as a cultural and family decision, it has increasingly become a long-term financial consideration for many couples.

The costs associated with raising a child—including healthcare, education, housing and other living expenses—have encouraged many families to plan more carefully before expanding their households.

Experts also say the decline in marriages cannot be attributed solely to changing social attitudes.

For many young people, starting a family depends on having stable employment, access to affordable housing and confidence in future economic prospects.

They note that higher housing prices, pressure on household purchasing power and broader economic uncertainty have led many couples to postpone marriage until they feel financially prepared, contributing to the country's evolving demographic trends.
